Weaving the Fabric

Woven textiles are created by interlacing warp and weft yarns at roughly right angles to one another. The long constant threads which run vertically in the fabric are warp yarns and the yarns that run perpendicular are the weft yarns. Nature is a specific type of weave pattern called a mock leno weave. This weave pattern is three or more warp and or weft yarns groped together so that adjacent groups of threads are separated during weaving. This effect creates a textured appearance and clear view through.

UNIFI – Creating Yarn from Recycled Water Bottles

Mermet has partnered with green manufacturing powerhouse, Unifi to make our GreenScreen Evolve and GreenScreen Revive fabrics possible. Americas based manufacturer, Unifi specializes in creating Repreve recycled fibers. Repreve transforms recycled plastic bottles into amazing products you use every day – including window shade fabrics. In comparison to virgin polyester, the Repreve yarns used in the creation of GreenScreen Revive and Evolve consume 6% less energy, nearly 50% less water, and emits 34% fewer greenhouse gases during the manufacturing process. You can help Mermet and Unifi #TURNITGREEN by recycling your used plastic bottles.

Recycling bottles can make a huge difference. Since 2009, REPREVE has transformed more than 4 billion plastic bottles that have been recycled by you to make recycled fibers.

Knitting the Fabric

After the Repreve yarn is made, it is colored in a die bath and then knitted into finished fabric. Knit fabrics consist of rows and loops intertwined around each to give the fabric a unique, texturized pattern. Unlike woven fabrics, warp knitting is a family of knitting methods in which the yarn zigzags along the length of the fabric, following adjacent columns, rather than a single row. Once knitted, the fabric is then fabricated into a finished shade product where it can then be used for varying window shade applications.

Material Transparency

Material Transparency

Created fundamentally different with material and environmental health in mind, GreenScreen fabrics are the smart alternative for activists looking to build and design greener.

Mindful Materials and Product Transparency

The Mindful Materials Library, powered by Origin, is a searchable database where users can find and easily compare architectural building products that have various transparency and sustainability attributes. The Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard

The Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard –administered by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute – provides a continuous improvement pathway towards the development of quality products. Products are evaluated on five categories: material health, material reutilization, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship and social fairness.

Product & Building Materials Red List

The materials red list is a compilation of harmful-to-humans’ chemicals and materials complied by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) as part of its Living Building Challenge. Products that contain chemicals on the red list must not be used if a building is to achieve Living Building status. All GreenScreen fabrics are in compliance with this list and may be used towards projects pursuing this recognition.

GreenScreen® Recovery Program

Through the GreenScreen Recovery Program, Mermet will take back and recycle 100% of any GreenScreen Evolve and GreenScreen Revive fabric received from program participants. The fabric will be processed to create a second generation recycled fiber which may be repurposed for a variety of products, including GreenScreen fabrics.
