What Is KOOLBLACK® Technology
What is KOOLBLACK® Technology?
Revolutionary KOOLBLACK® Technology represents the successful collaboration between Mermet and BASF, the world’s largest chemical company, to create the perfect shade fabric for commercial applications. From the beginning, Mermet set out to change the chemistry of dark fabrics so they perform as light colored fabrics with regards to heat control. In 2012, after 5 years of research and development, we succeeded.
With the help of BASF, Mermet was able to develop a new cooling agent and additive for our existing plastisol coating. We took this newly engineered coating and layer applied it to our specialty fiberglass core yarns for complete fabric coverage to ensure continuous performance. The result, KOOLBLACK® Technology fabrics.
KOOLBLACK® Technology works to enhance the energy reflectivity of dark yarns by increasing their ability to revert near infrared heat (NIR) from the sun. While the yarns of traditional dark screen fabrics absorb the heat created from the sun, yarns made with KOOLBLACK® Technology enable the dark fabric to reflect more solar energy, therefore absorb less heat.
Installed in a multitude of projects across the world, KOOLBLACK® Technology fabrics are more than shade material, but high performance building assets which have become a staple for architects and building owners looking to add dark shade fabrics as a heat reducing solution for their facades that save costs and contributes to occupant comfort.

100% of solar energy is either reflected (Rs), transmitted (Ts) or absorbed (As). With KOOLBLACK® Technology, dark color yarns absorb less solar energy, in turn, reflecting more of this energy back towards the outside. Below are thermal images of Mermet E Screen™ original fabric and Mermet E Screen™ with KOOLBLACK Technology in Charcoal/Charcoal. By adding KOOLBLACK Technology to the original fabric’s construction, Mermet is able to create an exact matching product with enhanced heat control.

Designing with T Screen™ with KOOLBLACK® Technology
T Screen™ with KOOLBLACK® Technology:
Designed for Versatility. Built for Performance.
T Screen™ with KOOLBLACK® is the best performing fabric in its category. Compared to similar dual-sided screen fabric, it has significant advantages in heat blockage and glare control. Position the dark side of the fabric to the interior for superior glare control and the white side to the exterior for superior heat reflectivity. The dark side may alternatively be faced to the exterior, since its dark yarns are infused with KOOLBLACK® Technology, and the white towards the interior. By combining KOOLBLACK Technology yarns with original white yarns, Mermet was able to provide a super-charged, heat reducing, satin weave fabric. This is shown in the below graphic example where the red line represents the reflectance of a standard satin weave across the UV, visible and infrared portion of the solar spectrum.
